Bandara Banten Selatan Akan Menjadi Bandara Penyangga Kargo Bandara Soekarno-Hatta Tangerang

Bandara Banten Selatan Akan Menjadi Bandara Penyangga Kargo Bandara Soekarno-Hatta Tangerang

(Ant/CP)

Forwarders more upbeat about airfreight than seafreight

airfreight and seafreight stifel logistics confidence index
The Stifel Logistics Confidence Index for May indicated some improvements from April’s decline. In particular, the six-month outlook appears bright as airfreight gained 2.8 points to 63.4 and sea freight increased 2.1 points to 62.9.

Overall, the total index increased 1.1 points to 57.4. Even though this is down 0.6 points from one year ago, it is still 6.7 points higher than May 2013.

Airfreight continues to lead the optimism for both the six-month outlook as well as for the present. Sea freight however, remains troublesome for the present and while some ports have settled labour issues, other issues such as the rise of the mega-vessel and larger shipping alliances are straining port operations. Congestion is a big problem for many ports and perhaps airfreight is currently benefiting from this misfortune of ports.

INDONESIAN Chamber of Commerce seeks delay in strict AIR CARGO screening

indonesia_air_freight_cargo_screening

THE Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called for further six-month postponement of a new cargo inspection process at international airports, saying lack of infrastructure and manpower will cause bottlenecks, reports the Jakarta Globe.

Ahead of the planned commencement of the cargo inspection process next week, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Suryo Bambang Sulisto said companies were not ready.

"There are only four cargo inspection agents handling 900 tons of merchandise per day. This will cause bottlenecks in airports, not to mention additional fees," said Mr Sulisto.

The regulation, designed to improve security surveillance at the urging of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, was first implemented in July at Soekarno Hatta International Airport. Packages are to be inspected individually, incurring an additional fee of 10 to 14 times the normal rate of IDR60 (US$0.007) per kilogramme.

When the system was implemented, chaos immediately ensued. A long backlog developed of cargo waiting for inspection, prompting cargo forwarding companies to strike, said the report.

Hundreds of tons of cargo, including newspapers, medicines and even human remains awaiting repatriation were stranded, incurring losses estimated in the billions of rupiah.

Hundreds of workers staged a one-day rally to protest the regulation that stipulated that only three companies - Duta Angkasa Prima Kargo, Gita Afian Trans and Fajar Anugerah Sejahtera - would be responsible for security screening of cargo shipments.

IATA: Soaring fuel costs will cut 2011 airline profits nearly 50pc

IATA

THE International Air Transport Association (IATA) has cut industry 2011 profit 2011 forecast to US$8.6 billion from last's year's $16 billion because of high oil prices.

"Today oil is the biggest risk. If its rise stalls global economic expansion, the outlook will deteriorate quickly," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO.

IATA raised its average oil price forecast to $96 per barrel, up from $84 in December, factoring in the impact of fuel hedging which is roughly 50 per cent of expected consumption.

"This year the industry is performing a balancing act on a very thin tight-rope of a 1.4 per cent margin. It is a structural problem that the industry has faced with an average margin of just 0.1 per cent over the last four decades," he said.

Oil prices could still damage the industry despite global GDP forecast increase of 3.1 per cent and demand in both passenger and cargo sectors, up 5.6 per cent and 6.1 per cent respectively. Cargo yields are up by 1.9 per cent from previous forecast of zero growth.

Regional winners continue to be Asia-Pacific at $3.7 billion collective profit although much reduced from the previous year's $7.6 billion through its exposure to low hedging on fuel price. Inflation fighting measures in China are also slowing trade and air cargo demand.

Middle East carriers are expected to return a profit of $700 million, much better than the $400 million previously forecast, but down from the $1.1 billion profit that the region posted in 2010.

Indonesia AirAsia will close 2 flight routes

The decision of PT Indonesia AirAsia (IAA) to  close the flight route from Jakarta to Medan and Jakarta to Surabaya certainly will not affect the capacity of flights to both these destinations. Both routes have the densest traffic flow with a number of airlines that compete in it.

"Competition was tight and ‘crowded’ for those routes. So if Indonesia AirAsia have other options it would be a company policy. But the flight capacity of those routes will not be disturbed, "said Tengku Burhanudin, Secretary General of the Indonesia National Air Carriers Association (INACA).

INACA annual data released in 2009 showed that Medan and Surabaya are the two most populous of the six airports in Indonesia. Last year, Juanda International Airport, Surabaya recorded a 8,436,000 flights, while the Polonia Airport, Medan recorded 3,840,000 flights. That’s why, this solid flight creates a high competition between airlines. Tengku Burhanuddin asserted, AirAsia's decision to close two routes is the company's strategy, not because these routes are empty of passengers.

Closure of these routes will commence as of October 1, 2010. AirAsia will only leave 20% of domestic flight route from all flights routes at the end of this year. "For time being, our international-domestic route comparison 75% -25%, and  it will be 80% -20%," said Corporate Communications Manager of Indonesia AirAsia, Audrey Petriny.

citilink_garuda_indonesia

Garuda Indonesia plans to spin off (separation) of its strategic business units, Citilink. Spin-off will be done after the initial public offering (IPO) which scheduled on fourth quarter 2010.

"The most fast of the spin-off is in the second half of next year. If IPO will done this year, it takes approximately 3-6 months to conduct activities such as spin-off," said Director of Strategic and Technology Garuda Indonesia, Elisa Lumbantoruan.

According to Elisa, the spin-off was conducted aiming to isolate the resources side, as well as from the operational side of the two airlines. This is because the working culture of the two airlines will be very different due to class differences of the two airlines. Garuda Indonesia will go into Full Service class, while Citilink join in No-Frills or Low Cost Carrier (LCC) class. "In addition, the spin-off also can simplify the management of capital. For example make it easier to find partners or investors”, Elisa explained.

Citilink’s spin off has been scheduled since 2009. However. until now the spin off plan is intercept by a number of requirements in order to get SIUP (Aviation Business License) from the Ministry of Transportation, among them are the business plan and the procurement of the fleet. Since not get the SIUP yet, currently Citilink still become one with Garuda Indonesia. Citilink have the same flight number with Garuda Indonesia, which begins with the letters GA.

AirAsia migrating from Open Skies to New Skies

One of Indonesian airlines, Air Asia migrating from Open Skies system to New Skies. This migration makes the Air Asia service is temporarily inaccessible to consumers. Why Air Asia to migrate?

"New Skies is an online reservation system that uses foremost technologies. New Skies is designed specifically to meet the needs of airlines," said President Director of Air Asia Indonesia Dharmadi in Jakarta on Thursday (08/07/2010).

Migration is done because the capacity of the Open Skies reservation system is no longer able to accommodate Air Asia passengers rapidity which reaches 26 million passengers a year. "With the New Skies system, will further facilitate the consumer in aviation services, either in the registration plane, hotel and check-in," he continued.

With New Skies system, airlines would be more economical price. Check-in costs and marketing will be reduced. The Air Asia.com website which can be accessed through mobile phones, check-in can be done. "By entering the code number of tickets through the website, consumers can directly check in, they will get the code for the barcode. At the airport only show the barcode, so can directly check-in. Be more economical and simple," said Dharmadi.

In addition, the transaction is no longer limited to a maximum of IDR 10 million. With New Skies system, transactions can not be limited. Dharmadi added that this system also includes a PNR (Passenger Name Record) for 50 people. Previously, the system is only able to carry 10 people. Thus, the amount of revenue passenger capacity becomes larger.

Other convenience services offered by this new system is the connecting flight. If on the previous system, passengers must check-in, check-out, then check in again at the time of transit between regions or countries, so in this new system only need one-time passengers check-in.

"For example, the flight route from Jakarta - Kuala Lumpur - London. In the previous system, passengers while landing in Kuala Lumpur should be checking out of the plane and then check in again for a flight to London. On the New Skies, passengers simply check-in in Jakarta only. So when you arrive in Kuala Lumpur, passengers only transit, no check-out to move the plane to London, "said Audrey, Corporate Communications Manager of Air Asia Indonesia. Transactions also become easier because it can use multiple currencies.
